Ukrainian President Urges Immediate Sanctions Amid Intensified Attacks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for the implementation of additional sanctions as his country faces intensified aerial strikes from Russia, which increasingly employs guided missiles and drones that evade air defenses. Zelensky confirmed on Thursday while in Canada that he plans to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden at the end of September in New York, according to World Signal.
“Sanctions must be imposed immediately. They need to be strong. It is a tool that the United States can use to deprive Russia of the ability to fund its war against Ukraine. Honestly, I sometimes do not understand why decisions cannot be made quickly,” Zelensky stated in a call to action, which he also shared on X.
Zelensky emphasized the urgent need for decisions regarding sanctions, economic and energy restrictions against the Russian Federation, as well as the limitation of the production of ballistic missiles and related weapons.
The U.S. Senate approved a package of sanctions on Monday aimed at increasing pressure on Russia and helping to end the war in Ukraine. These sanctions primarily target countries that continue to purchase oil and gas from Russia. The package, which still requires approval from the House of Representatives, was developed over a year by the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
“This bill must pass and gain support. Additionally, decisive action from the U.S. administration is essential. I firmly hope that we will see such measures,” the Ukrainian president noted.
Zelensky assured that Ukraine is capable of responding to any operations Russia might undertake. “Russia knows that if it attacks — and is preparing to target our energy systems this winter — it will receive the same in response,” said the Ukrainian leader, stressing that Ukraine seeks to negotiate an end to the war.
“The prolongation of the war poses a challenge not only for Ukraine but also for the Russian economy and the entire world,” Zelensky remarked, referring, among other issues, to the blockade of the Black Sea which impacts the crucial corridor for food transportation.
“Agriculture and energy are two challenges facing the world today. And if peace is currently impossible because one person (Russian President Vladimir Putin) does not desire it, we can address the issue of an energy truce and food security. These are decisions that can be made,” Zelensky asserted.
