In just under two weeks, Pittsburgh voters and Allegheny County residents will cast their votes in Pennsylvania’s primary election. Races include everything from state governor all the way down to county committee members depending on your municipality.

If you signed up for mail ballots, you can get a jump start on casting your vote. Here’s how.

When is the 2026 primary election in Allegheny County?

Allegheny’s primary election will take place on Tuesday, May 19. The general election will happen on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

When do I vote in person in Pennsylvania with a mail ballot?

If you’re voting by mail ballot, you can cast your vote at your county election office or another officially designated location before Election Day.

Tuesday, May 12 is the last day to vote in person with a mail ballot. But ballots can be dropped off at return locations throughout the county until 8 p.m. on Election Day, as long as voters have applied for their mail ballots ahead of the May 12 deadline.

When do I need to apply for a mail ballot for Allegheny’s primary election?

In order to vote using a mail ballot, you’ll need to have submitted a completed application to your county election office ahead of time. This application must be received by your county election office by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, according to the Pennsylvania Department of State. The application is available on their website.

You can also apply for, pick up and vote with your mail ballot on the same day at Allegheny County Elections’ office. The office is located at 542 Forbes Avenue, Room 312, in Pittsburgh.

What do I bring with me to apply for a mail ballot?

When you apply for your mail ballot, you’ll need your Pennsylvania driver’s license or PennDOT ID number, or the last four digits of your social security number.

If you don’t have these forms of identification, you should bring another form of photo identification such as a U.S. passport, U.S. Military ID, photo employee identification issued by any level of government, photo employee identification issued by an accredited state public or private higher education institution, or a photo identification issued by a Pennsylvania care facility.

How do I know if I’m registered to vote in Allegheny County?

The Pennsylvania Department of State’s website allows you to look up your voter registration status. You can look up your status on their website by searching your name or by using your driver’s license number or PennDOT ID.

The deadline to register to vote in Allegheny’s primary election was May 4, but there’s still time to register to vote in the general election, with deadline of Oct. 19.

What if I missed the deadline but am going to be out of town on Election Day?

Voters can request an emergency absentee ballot after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12 in situations like a last-minute absence from their municipality or an unexpected illness or disability.

The application form is available online on The Pennsylvania Department of State’s website and can be submitted to Allegheny County Elections any time before 8 p.m. on Election Day, the same time absentee ballots are also due.

Can a family member or friend drop off my ballot for me?

Under state law, voters must return their own ballots, though there’s an exception for voters with a disability who have designated someone in writing through the “Authorize a Designated Agent Form” to deliver their ballot. That form can be found on the Pennsylvania Department of State’s website.

What ballot options are available for voters with disabilities? When are ballots due?

Disabled voters who utilize screen readers and assistive devices may be eligible to receive an accessible remote ballot.

To get an accessible remote ballot, an individual must be a registered Pennsylvania voter, apply for a mail or absentee ballot by May 12 and submit a request for an accessible remote ballot online, through the mail or via email.

When Allegheny County Elections has processed the request, staff will send out a packet of accessible voting material, including a return envelope and a secrecy envelope, as well as an email with instructions for how to access the ballot.

Completed ballots must be received by Allegheny County Elections by 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Can I see if my ballot was accepted and counted?

The status of your ballot can be tracked online at the Pennsylvania Department of State’s website. Additionally, if you provide your email address to Allegheny County Elections when you register to vote or apply for a mail ballot, you may receive an email when your returned ballot is received and other information about its status.
