Foreign minister visits Jordan, a ‘key factor for regional stability’

Following his visit to Beirut, Foreign minister Maxime Prévot has visited Jordan, a country regarded as a “key partner and a factor for regional stability”.

Prévot was received in Amman by his counterpart, Ayman Safadi. He thanked the Jordanian authorities for their role in the evacuation of Belgian citizens and their families from Gaza, as well as their commitment to providing humanitarian aid.

Belgium and Jordan “maintain a long-standing, solid and balanced relationship, based on strategic cooperation that combines security, counter-terrorism, multilateral action and the coordinated management of regional challenges”.

“Like Lebanon, Jordan is today the victim of a conflict it did not choose,” said Prévot, noting that the country is hosting 3.7 million refugees on its territory and has been hit by multiple Israeli strikes.

Prévot was at the Belgian embassy in Beirut on Wednesday when the country was hit by large-scale Israeli air strikes, shortly after a ceasefire was agreed between the US and Iran.

“The attacks launched by Hezbollah against Israel in support of Iran are reprehensible. The disproportionate response by the State of Israel, which threatens Lebanon’s territorial integrity, is equally so,” he posted on X on Thursday. “Diplomacy must prevail over weapons. The ceasefire negotiated between the US and Iran should also extend to Lebanon.”
